- Affordable New LC Model Delivers 68040 Performance for Education

- CUPERTINO, California--October 21, 1993--Broadening its versatile and
- popular LC family product line, Apple Computer, Inc. today introduced
- the Macintosh LC 475, a high-performance, affordable LC model
- expected to have broad-based appeal in the education marketplace.
- The new LC 475, based on the powerful Motorola 68040 microprocessor,
- delivers more than twice the performance of the current LC III. The
- base configuration is expected to be offered at $1,082 to qualified
- education institutions.
- "We believe the LC to be one of the top selling personal computers in
- the industry," said Randy Battat, vice president of desktop and
- PowerBook computers for Apple's Personal Computer Division. "Because
- the new LC 475 brings 040 performance and versatility down to a very
- attractive price point, we expect to draw even more new users to the
- platform."

- customers, especially among higher education institutions," said Jim
- Buckley, vice president, general manager for Apple USA's Higher
- Education Division. "The LC 475 offers unmatched performance and
- value as a workstation in professional, learning and classroom
- environments."

- Powered by a 25MHz Motorola 68LC040 microprocessor, the LC 475
- becomes the highest performance Macintosh LC. The LC 475 features
- 32-bit architecture and can be purchased with either an 80MB or 160MB
- internal hard drive. It comes with 512K VRAM standard, which is
- expandable to 1MB VRAM, and offers expandability to 36MB RAM,
- allowing users to work with multiple applications simultaneously from
- a library of more than 6,000 Macintosh applications currently available.
- Compliant with the EPA's Energy Star Program, the LC 475 provides
- energy-efficient operation without requiring the system to power down
- into special rest or idle states. In full operation it consumes less
- than 30 watts.

- Versatile
- Designed for maximum versatility, the LC 475 delivers full monitor
- flexibility and will support all current Apple monitors, including
- the Macintosh 21" Display. Graphics capability has also been expanded
- to support up to 32K colors on a 16" monitor. The internal
- expansion slot is compatible with the LC III LC PDS slot, allowing
- customers to use their LC III Apple IIe emulation cards, as well as
- LC-compatible Ethernet and networking cards.
- The LC 475 runs System Software 7.1 and includes Quicktime 1.6,
- HyperCard Player 2.1. A CD-ROM driver and Ethernet software are also
- pre-installed on the hard drive so that customers can enjoy true
- "plug and play" operability. In addition, the LC 475 comes with
- 8-bit on-board stereo sound input and 8-bit stereo output, as well as
- a SCSI port for connecting to many types of peripherals such as
- external hard drives, scanners, and CD-ROM drives.

- Affordable
- The Macintosh LC 475 system will be offered to qualified education
- institutions in the U.S.. Pricing is expected to range between
- $1,082 to $1,402 depending on configuration. Pricing includes CPU,
- keyboard and mouse. In addition, Apple will offer a Macintosh LC
- 475 Logic Board Upgrade Kit, for current Macintosh LC II and LC III
- customers. Displays will be sold separately. Distribution, pricing
- and configurations will vary outside the U.S.
